About the Event
Explore the fundamentals of dyeing with Indigo and Japanese Shibori. You’ll learn the basic process of vat dyeing with plant derived, beautiful blue Indigo. Experiment with various Shibori resist techniques to create patterns on fabric and then use this knowledge to dye items brought from home. This is a great opportunity for upcycling as a eco friendly approach that fits with natural dyeing.
Please bring 2 to 4 items from home to dye. Choose natural materials - cotton, linen or silk - and pre washed is best. Please do not bring bulky, woollen or large items (eg jeans, wool jumpers, sheets) as vat space will be limited. Wear suitable old clothes. You will also need elbow length rubber gloves, a container to take wet materials home, and you may wish to bring a camera or notebook to document as you go.
Suitable for adults and children over 15 years.
Please note for this class the indigo vat is made in advance. While we will not be covering indigo recipes or the process of making up indigo vats for dyeing, you will be given resources and links to research this process for yourself.
