About the Event

Embark on a botanical dyeing journey with madder, an ancient red dye source from the root of the plant Rubia cordifolia. Using a little simple chemistry and perhaps a touch of magic, you will experiment with modifiers to learn how to alter your results and create several different and dramatic hues. Each person will create a booklet of fabric swatches and gain an indepth understanding of this classic dye. There will be the opportunity to pre-purchase skeins of 8 ply merino wool from Dye Happy Yarns to dye and take home for your knitting projects. Not a knitter? Opt for a silk scarf instead. Those with experience in mordanting may also wish to bring something ready to dye from home to colour in the dye bath such as a t shirt or pillow case. This is a magical workshop for dyers of all skill levels.
